In 1978 on completion of serving eight years in the Australian Army Band Corps, Bob was invited to play bass trombone with the Tommy Tycho International Orchestra in Sydney.
Bob held this position for six years and in that time was also asked to play bass trombone for the Daly Wilson Big Band's 10th anniversary tour. He played with both for a further four years, as bass and tenor trombonist. This led to Bob being invited to play in the backing orchestras for many overseas artists. Later, he quickly became one of Sydney's leading studio musicians, playing for television and radio jingles, records and CDs.
From 1982 to 1986, Bob played for the TCN channel 9 Midday show orchestra under the direction of Geoff Harvey. In 1987 David Atkins engaged Bob as musical director and trombonist for his ever popular dance shows, including the internationally acclaimed 'Hot Shoe Shuffle'.
In 1990, he was appointed director of music for the prestigious 'James Morrison Generations in Jazz Scholarship', a position he held for five years. In that time, he was instrumental in creating one Australia's largest festival events, now involving more than 60 high schools Australia wide.
In the 80s to early 90s, Bob was invited to tour playing trombone for Sammy Davis Jnr, Peter Allen, Natalie Cole, Frank Sinatra and Barbara Streisand amongst others. (See the artists Bob has performed with.)
In 1995, Bob was invited to be lecturer for a degree in Jazz Studies course at Griffith University in Queensland, Australia. This was a three year contract.
In 1999, Bob was selected as musical director for Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean International and Seabourn Cruises. This gave him the opportunity to travel extensively worldwide, playing alongside many great musicians from all over the globe.
Bob returned to Adelaide in 2003, where he formed the 'Bob Johnson Big Band', which quickly gained popularity.
In 2003, Bob was contracted to arrange and conduct a CD for vocalist Greg Meyer, which was released in 2006. It is available in all major record stores. Click here to visit Greg Meyer's Website.
